# Gifts for Swimmers: What a Swimming Teacher Would Actually Buy

Most presents bought for swimmers end up in a drawer. The towel with a pun on it, the mug, the novelty key ring: kind thoughts, none of which go anywhere near a pool. The gifts that actually get used are the ones that make the next swim better, and those are surprisingly cheap, small enough to wrap, and easy to get right once you know what kind of swimmer you are buying for. We teach children and adults in pools across Gloucestershire every week, so this is the list we would give a friend who asked, sorted by who the swimmer is and what you want to spend.

## First, work out which kind of swimmer they are

The same gift can be perfect for one swimmer and useless for another. Fins are a good example: brilliant for an adult whose legs sink, pointless for a five year old who cannot yet float on their back. Before you choose, place the person in one of these groups.

- **A child who is still learning.** Roughly the first three [Swim England stages](https://www.swimdesignspace.com/blog/swim-england-framework-awards): getting their face in, floating, travelling a short way on their own. Comfort and confidence matter more than anything technical.
- **A young swimmer with the basics.** Swims a length or more, is working on proper strokes in lessons or a club. Ready for kit that builds technique.
- **An adult who is still finding their stroke.** Learned recently, or came back to swimming after years away, and is working on front crawl breathing or a kick that does not drag.
- **A regular lane swimmer.** Swims a few times a week, owns goggles and a cap already, and is the hardest person on your list. They want to get faster or fitter without getting bored.

If you are not sure, ask a casual question about their last swim. "How many lengths do you do?" tells you more than you would think.

## For a child who is still learning

At this stage the best present is anything that makes the pool feel less strange. Water in the eyes and a cold head are two of the most common reasons a young child dreads a lesson, and both are cheap to fix.

**Goggles made for small faces.** Adult goggles slip on a child's face and leak within a length. ## For a young swimmer who has the basics

Once a child can swim a length, the job changes from confidence to technique. This is the age when the right training kit makes lessons and club sessions go further, because it lets them feel what a good position is like before they can hold it on their own.

## For the lane swimmer who has everything

Regular swimmers own the basics and are fussy about them. What they rarely buy for themselves is the kit that turns the same 40 lengths into a session with a purpose. These are the gifts that get a "how did you know?"

## What not to buy

A shop telling you what to avoid is unusual, but a gift that disappoints helps nobody. These are the mistakes we see most.

- **Training kit for someone who cannot yet swim a length.** A snorkel or paddles will not teach a non-swimmer to swim. Lessons will, and the kit can wait until they are ready for it.
- **Long fins for technique work.** Long, stiff fins are for snorkelling and diving. In a lane they make swimming feel effortless for the wrong reasons and can strain the ankles.
- **Mirrored goggles for a beginner in an indoor pool.** They look the part, but in a dim pool a mirrored or dark lens makes it harder to see the wall and the line on the bottom. Clear or lightly tinted is better indoors.
- **Anything sized by guesswork.** Fins too big blister, goggles too wide leak. If you cannot find out a size, choose something that does not need one: a Tempo Trainer, a stopwatch, a strap or a cap.
- **Kit as a replacement for teaching.** Every item here makes a good swimmer better or a learning swimmer more comfortable. None of it fixes a stroke on its own. If someone you are buying for is stuck, kit plus a few lessons is the combination that works.

## Sizes, delivery and returns

**Sizes.** Junior fins go by shoe size, so check the child's current shoes. Children's goggles are sold by age band (3 to 8, or 4 to 10), and the Animal Heads cap fits from about three. Adult fins have a size guide on the product page.

**Returns.** Under our [returns policy](https://shop.swimdesignspace.com/policies/refund-policy) you can send back most unused items in their original packaging within 30 days of receiving them, and the buyer pays the return postage. Two things matter for presents. Items taken out of sealed packaging, goggles included, cannot be returned unless faulty, so leave them sealed until the swimmer is sure. And the 30 days start when your order arrives, not on the day it is opened.
