Know What to Expect Before You Arrive
At Swim Design Space, we make sure your first swim class feels welcoming and clear.
You’ll be greeted by one of our friendly teachers who will:
- Introduce themselves and answer any last-minute questions
- Take you through a gentle warm-up or water confidence routine
- Match the pace to your comfort level, whether you’re a total beginner or just out of practice
Kids are gently introduced to the pool through play and trust-building activities, while adults are given space to adjust and breathe before diving into technique.
1. What to Pack in Your Swim Bag
Here’s a quick checklist so nothing gets forgotten:
Essentials for Everyone:
- Swimsuit (fully fitted and comfortable)
- Towel
- Goggles (required)
- Flip-flops or poolside shoes
- Water bottle (if needed)
- Change of clothes (for after the class)
Need gear? Check out our online swim shop for beginner-friendly essentials.
2. Arrive a Bit Early (But Not Too Early)
Try to arrive around 5–10 minutes before class starts. This gives you time to:
- Sign in (if required)
- Use the changing rooms without feeling rushed
- Get familiar with the environment
Being a little early helps kids settle in and gives adults a chance to relax before stepping in the water.
3. Talking Through Nerves (Especially With Kids)
If your child is feeling unsure or if you are, that’s totally normal. Here’s what helps:
For kids:
- Explain that it’s okay not to know how to swim; everyone in the class is learning
- Let them bring a familiar item like a towel from home or goggles they picked themselves
For adults:
- Remind yourself there’s no judgement. Our classes are designed for support
- Take a few deep breaths before entering the pool
- Let the teacher know if there’s anything that would help you feel more comfortable
4. Don’t Worry About Swimming "Well"
The goal of your first class isn’t to be perfect; it’s to get comfortable. At Swim Design Space, we start with basics like
- Floating and breathing
- Water entry and confidence drills
- Simple propulsion and supported movement
The key is progress, not perfection. You will be amazed at how quickly confidence grows once you feel safe in the water.
5. After Class: What Happens Next?
After your first session:
- Your teacher will share feedback and suggest next steps (if required).
- You will have the option to continue with a suitable group or private path
We offer certificates and celebrate progression milestones so every swimmer feels proud of their journey.
